Alex Torres records guitar for production libraries and explained how he gets amp tone without disturbing his apartment neighbors.
What's your volume solution?
Weber MiniMass attenuator, about $180. It sits between my amp head and cabinet, letting me push the tubes hard while the actual speaker output stays around 85dB. Sounds like cranked Marshall at conversation level.
Microphone setup?
Single SM57 positioned halfway between the dust cap and edge of the speaker cone, about two inches back. I've tested expensive ribbon mics, but the 57 cuts through a mix better and costs $100.
Any room treatment needed?
I face the cabinet into the corner with the mic between the amp and wall. This creates natural early reflections that add dimension without room reverb washing everything out.
Compared to amp simulators?
Plugins have improved, but moving air through a real speaker creates harmonic complexity I haven't heard digitally reproduced yet. The physical feedback between guitar and amp matters for performance feel.
